Shutters, as with other types of window fashions, have differences that you need to be aware of before making your decision. Shutters are commonly manufactured from these different materials.

Vinyl
These are the least expensive. They are PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride), ABS (Acrylonitrate-Butadiene-Styrene) or a combination of the two. There are some vinyl clad shutters, these are vinyl wrapped around either aluminum or mdf board. These shutters are the heaviest, therefore sometimes see stress on the hinges (sagging) over the years.

Composite
These are made from a composite of wood fibers and resin formed and painted. We at Arizona Blinds® prefer these over vinyl. They are lighter, more durable and stand up better in our climate. These are a good choice where humidity is a concern, such as shower and bath areas but we sell and install thousands of sq. ft. of these every year in the entire house.

Wood Shutters
This is the highest quality shutter you can put in your home or business. Furniture grade, basswood shutters add value to the appraisal of your home, it's one of the best upgrades you can do. Beware though!

Basswood is from the Linden tree, grown on the East coast. Basswood is the best wood for building shutters. It comes in 5 different grades. Due to our climate here in Arizona, basswood needs to be kiln-dried to a 7% moisture content. A 25% moisture content is preferable in North Carolina, but not here they will warp and crack. That's why Arizona Blinds® sells basswood shutters manufactured right here, by local craftsmen, that know what is necessary, like moisture content and UV protected finishes.

Arizona Blinds® also proudly sells specialty custom shutters such as knotty alder and other specialty woods. We sell distressed shutters, shutters with custom copper inserts, shutters with saguaro cactus and/or willow... just about any custom idea you have, we can create. We've been in the business for a long time, shutters can be tricky and you'll get different answers, we will tell you the truth because we know the answers.
