Mad Men’s Cool Style

The popular television show Mad Men has captivated viewers all over the country. The 1960’s-set television show features intriguing characters like Don Draper and Peggy Olson, fabulous clothes, and the sets are to die for. If you love the look of 60’s houses (and we hope you do), this blog post is all about how to let the 60’s inspire your own décor, without being over the top. There are a few different styles on display in the Mad Men sets. First, there is

Mid-Century Modern

full of sleek furniture and clean lines, used in the Sterling-Cooper Ad Agency. Then there’s the more traditional Draper home, similar to the Colonial Revival style, with dark drapery, comfy couches, varying shades of blues, and fun patterns. Peggy Olson’s apartment, on the other hand, is modest and simple, with traditional furniture and plaid

drapes

.
To make your home look like one of their homes, pick a style and put touches of it everywhere, but don’t overwhelm the room, otherwise it will look like a TV show set instead of a house. Drapes are a great place to start. Good colors for this time period’s style are blue, dark green, white, chocolate brown, or burnt orange. If you want to go with a pattern, plaid is the best option, unless it’s a kitchen you’re decorating, then florals are a great choice.
After the

drapes

are chosen, other accents that remind you of the 60’s are all you really need. A graphic wall sculpture or painting, boldly printed pillows or duvets, a sculptural partition, or white knick knacks (see our previous post about White-on-White decorating for some ideas on the use of white) will look great! And remember, you don’t want to overwhelm the room, and you want it to feel like it’s vintage, so keep the furniture simple and unornamented, like it was back then.
